The Clubs Association, representing the 32 teams in the top two leagues of Norwegian football, has advised the federation against the use of the VAR system in the new season. In the vote held, 19 clubs rejected the VAR system, while 13 clubs voted in favor of its continuation. The Norwegian Football Federation is expected to make a decision on this matter in March.
Football clubs competing in the top-tier leagues in Norway have recommended to the federation to disable the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, which has recently caused controversies.
19 OUT OF 32 TEAMS SAID "REMOVE IT"
In a statement made by the Clubs Union, which represents the 32 teams in Norway's top two leagues (Eliteserien and OBOS), it was noted that a majority vote was taken to recommend not using the VAR system in the new season. It was reported that 19 clubs rejected the VAR system, while 13 clubs voted to continue its implementation.
FEDERATION WILL DECIDE IN MARCH
Norwegian Clubs Union President Cato Haug, whose views were included in the statement, said, "We are aware that this technology has potential, but from today's discussion and the subsequent voting, we see that the majority of our clubs believe that the current version of VAR is not working well enough." Following the advisory decision made by the clubs, the final decision regarding the future of VAR in the country's football is expected to be made by the Norwegian Football Federation in March.
VAR WAS PROTESTED, MATCH WAS HALTED
Norwegian football fans have protested the VAR system in many matches, claiming it diminishes the enjoyment of the game. A league match between Rosenborg and Lillestrøm, which was the scene of intense protests in July 2024, was halted due to various objects thrown onto the field.
SWEDEN HAD MADE THIS DECISION BEFORE
If the Norwegian Football Federation implements this idea coming from the majority of teams in the top two leagues, it will become the second country to cancel VAR. Previously, the Swedish Football Federation had also decided not to use the VAR system.
