Ezel Erdem, an 18-year-old girl who became paralyzed after a pair of scissors was thrown during a fight between two people in Sultangazi, Istanbul, 5.5 years ago, made a call for justice. The young girl, who has become dependent on her bed, published a video on her social media account urging for Ümit Gök, the person responsible for her condition, to be punished. Ümit Gök is being tried for the crime of "causing injury with possible intent" and faces a prison sentence of up to 7 years and 6 months, but he is still free.

18-year-old Ezel Erdem, who was caught in the middle of a fight between two people in Sultangazi 5 and a half years ago, suffered spinal cord injury after the scissors thrown in the fight pierced her neck. While Ümit Gök, who caused her to live dependent on a bed, continues to roam outside without punishment, Ezel continues to spend her youth within the four walls of her home. Ezel's only wish is for justice to be served.

EZEL PARALYZED, SUSPECT FREE

Despite receiving various treatments since she was 13, the 18-year-old girl, who has been paralyzed for 5.5 years, published a video on her social media account calling for Ümit Gök, who caused her to be bedridden, to be punished. Paralyzed Ezel Erdem made a call for justice. The young girl stated, "Just as I have been confined to home, he should also be confined within four walls."

WHAT HAPPENED?

On August 24, 2019, in Sultangazi, during a fight between two groups, the thrown scissors pierced the neck of Ezel Erdem, who was on her way to the park for a picnic with her family. Erdem became paralyzed from the neck down. Three days after the incident, Ümit Gök was arrested, and a case was opened against him for "causing injury with possible intent," with a request for up to 7 years and 6 months in prison. In the first hearing on November 12, 2019, at the Gaziosmanpaşa 10th Criminal Court of First Instance, the detained suspect Ümit Gök claimed that he threw the scissors in anger after seeing his mother and father being assaulted during the argument, and he did not know how the scissors hit the victim Ezel Erdem.

The court also decided to release the suspect Ümit Gök with a request for judicial control. However, on the second hearing on March 5, 2020, the suspect Gök was re-arrested at the request of the Erdem family. However, he was released again on January 12, 2021.
