After 7 years, 6 spillway gates opened on May 11 at the Keban Dam and HEPP in Elazığ's Keban district due to heavy rainfall and snowmelt have been closed as water levels returned to normal.
The spillway gates at the historic Keban Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) in the Keban district of Elazığ, which were opened after a full seven years due to rising water levels, have completed their task. As the water discharge process initiated against a potential flood risk ended, the 6 opened gates were closed by teams yesterday evening.
CRITICAL INTERVENTION AGAINST FLOOD RISK
Heavy rainfall effective in the region during the spring months and rapidly melting snow caused high-flow water inflow into the dam reservoir on the Euphrates River. As the water level approached the maximum safety limits, teams from the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) 9th Regional Directorate took action. To ensure the safety of the facility and surrounding areas, 6 spillway gates were opened in a controlled manner on May 11, initiating the discharge of excess water.
FACILITY BREATHES A SIGH OF RELIEF
As of yesterday evening, with the water level dropping to the desired level, the gates were locked again. With the water level returning to normal, the facility breathed a sigh of relief.
Thanks to this meticulously conducted process by DSİ officials, the water level in the dam was kept within safe limits, preventing any disruption to energy production and eliminating environmental risks.
