The incident in the Indian state of West Bengal continues to shake the academic world. A female professor at MAKAUT University has been embroiled in a major scandal after images of her performing a Hindu wedding ritual with a student in class went viral on social media.
In the incident that occurred on January 28, the Head of the Department of Applied Psychology held a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in class with a first-year student. The professor, seen in bridal attire, later claimed that it was a "psychological drama project" and alleged that the images were leaked by a colleague who wanted to defame her.
However, the university administration assessed the situation differently. A five-member investigation committee was established, which rejected the professor's claims. Acting Rector Tapash Chakraborty described the events as "an inappropriate welcome show," and the professor was temporarily suspended from her duties.
The professor, stating that the events deeply affected her, sent an email to the university administration on February 1, expressing her desire to resign. General Secretary Partha Pratim Lahiri announced that evaluations regarding the resignation request were ongoing and that a decision would be announced soon.
The incident has sparked new discussions in India regarding academic ethics and teacher-student relationships, while also resonating widely on social media. The university administration announced that it would take new measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
