Serkan Erman, a 48-year-old Fenerbahçe fan staying in a private hospital in Istanbul for a kidney transplant, woke up hours after watching the Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe derby on October 26 with chest and left arm pain. Erman, who was determined to have had a heart attack, underwent angioplasty, and the transplant was postponed for about 6 months. His doctor said that during an examination 3 months ago, his heart was completely normal.

Fenerbahçe fan Serkan Erman (48), while under observation in the hospital for a kidney transplant, watched his team's away match against Galatasaray. It was determined that Erman, who became stressed after the derby, suffered a heart attack. While Erman, on whom doctors intervened, is still being treated, his kidney transplant was postponed for about 6 months. Serkan Erman said, "About 2 hours after watching the match, I got quite stressed. When I fell asleep, I woke up with very severe chest pain and pain in my left arm. I called the nurse, and they called our doctors. After an electrocardiogram was taken, it became clear that I had suffered a heart attack. God willing, we want to see Fenerbahçe in better days and in more championships."

Fenerbahçe fan Serkan Erman, who is a chronic kidney patient, applied to a private hospital in Istanbul for a transplant. After the necessary tests before surgery, Erman was hospitalized one day before the transplant procedure and kept under observation; on October 26, he watched the Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe match in his room. Saying he experienced intense stress during the match, which ended in a 2-1 Galatasaray win, Erman also followed the comments made after the match. Wanting to sleep after the sports programs ended, Serkan Erman informed the doctors when he felt severe pain in his left arm and chest. In tests performed at the hospital, it was determined that he had suffered a heart attack, and he recovered with the doctors' intervention. Serkan Erman, who underwent angiography after the heart attack, will wait about 6 months to have a kidney transplant.

THE MATCH ENDED, HE WOKE UP AT NIGHT WITH CHEST PAIN

Stating that he has been a Fenerbahçe fan since childhood, Serkan Erman said, "I am a chronic kidney patient; I was hospitalized on the 26th. I was going to have a kidney transplant on Tuesday as well. On the evening of the 26th, while waiting for my surgery in my room, I was watching the Fenerbahçe match on my computer. After the match ended, I got stressed because of the result. I was watching the commentators and so on. After watching the commentators, when I went to bed and tried to sleep, I woke up with very severe chest and left arm pain. I called the nurse and told her I couldn't breathe and had chest pain. They called our doctors and performed an echocardiogram. After an electrocardiogram was taken, it was revealed that I had suffered a heart attack. In the morning, I was taken for angiography, and it caused my kidney transplant to be postponed for about 3 to 6 months. Now we are waiting for our kidney transplant. Our late uncle made us Fenerbahçe fans. As much as we can, when I am not sick, we try to go to Fenerbahçe matches. God willing, we want to see Fenerbahçe in better days and in more championships."

DOCTOR: HE WAS COMPLETELY NORMAL 3 MONTHS AGO

Prof. Dr. Mahmut Uluganyan, who treated Erman, said, "The patient applied to us about 3 months ago for a kidney transplant. Before a transplant, kidney transplant patients come and are evaluated regarding the heart, and we evaluate these patients to see whether there is any obstacle due to the heart. When we performed our evaluation, there was no problem in his heart functions, ECG, or echo, and we gave the patient approval saying 'he can have a transplant.' When he was hospitalized for the transplant, when his ECG was taken again at our institution before the transplant, signs of a heart attack were seen. We took the patient for angiography and opened the blockage in his vessel with balloon and stent methods. He said his distress began with intense stress after the Fenerbahçe match. We can indeed see this situation; after all, about half of heart attacks occur through plaque ruptures without vessel blockage. We can see these plaque ruptures after intense stress, intense sadness, or intense joy. Therefore, it is possible for us to say that the patient's condition was frankly related to the match. Because when we examined this patient 3 months ago, he was a patient whose ECG, echo, and effort were completely normal."

HE WILL WAIT 5-6 MONTHS FOR TRANSPLANT

Prof. Dr. Uluganyan said, "Now what we will do regarding this patient will be this: We opened his blocked vessel very appropriately and nicely. We will give this patient medication treatments; he will receive blood-thinning treatment and heart-protective treatments. After that, in about 5-6 months, if his general condition is good, perhaps we will start his transplant process again. His life risk was much higher before the procedure; for now, of course, even if every heart patient's vessel is opened, since he has had a heart attack process, the risk continues, but of course, after the vessel is opened, it continues by decreasing very significantly. To avoid encountering such situations, telling a person 'stay away from stress' is really the easiest part of the matter, but he will stay away from stress as much as possible. If there is an action ahead that he thinks will create stress, if he can eliminate that stressful action, he will eliminate it if possible. If he can avoid it, we recommend that he avoid it."
