Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten has announced that he and his fiancé, Argentine national hockey player Nicolás Keenan, are expecting their first child. The couple said they will have a baby with the support of a surrogate mother and an egg donor, and reported that the birth is expected to take place in spring 2027. Jetten is also preparing to make history as the first post-war Dutch prime minister to have a child while in office.
THEY ANNOUNCED THE HAPPY NEWS WITH AN ULTRASOUND PHOTO
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, 39, and his 29-year-old fiancé Nicolás Keenan shared the baby news on their social media accounts. The couple published a message in Dutch, Spanish and English along with a photo in which they held the ultrasound image.
The post included the words, "A very special person is on the way. See you in 2027, our little baby."
Jetten and Keenan also thanked the egg donor who helped them have a baby and the surrogate mother named Lisa.
THE SURROGATE MOTHER AND DONOR ARE FRIENDS OF THE COUPLE
According to a statement from the Democrats 66 (D66) party, which Jetten leads, surrogate mother Lisa and the egg donor are Dutch citizens and from the couple's close circle.
It was announced that both women have children and did not take part in the process for any commercial gain. It was stated that the pregnancy was achieved through IVF treatment administered in the Netherlands.
Surrogate mother Lisa said she was happy to help the couple realize their dream of having a child.
WILL SET A FIRST IN THE NETHERLANDS
Rob Jetten, who became the Netherlands' first openly gay prime minister, took office in 2026. With the birth of his child in 2027, Jetten will become the first Dutch prime minister to have a child while in office since the Second World War.
Jetten and Nicolás Keenan, a player for the Argentina national field hockey team, became engaged in November 2024. The couple had postponed their wedding, which they planned to hold this year, after Jetten began his role as prime minister.
SURROGACY IS BEING DEBATED AGAIN IN THE NETHERLANDS
Commercial surrogacy is banned in the Netherlands. However, under certain conditions, non-commercial surrogacy arrangements are permitted.
Regulations on the legal parenthood of children born through surrogacy in the country are also on the agenda to be developed. The bill, expected to be discussed in December, envisages granting parenthood from the moment the child is born to the people who want to have a child, provided the necessary conditions are met.
Jetten stated that the surrogate mother and the baby were in good health and asked that the privacy of those involved in the process be respected.
