Political circles in the UK are alarmed over the possible return plans of Syria's ousted leader Bashar al-Assad's British wife, Asma al-Assad. Authorities have called for the cancellation of Asma al-Assad's passport, who holds dual citizenship.
Following the fall of the regime in Syria this month, striking allegations have emerged regarding the Assad couple, who sought refuge in Russia. According to Turkish media, 49-year-old Asma al-Assad plans to return to the UK for cancer treatment.
Justice Minister Robert Jenrick stated, "The return of Assad's wife to a luxurious life in the UK would be an insult to millions of victims," while Foreign Secretary David Lammy added, "As someone under sanctions, she would not be welcomed in the UK."
Born and raised in London with a successful banking career, Asma al-Assad married Bashar al-Assad in 2000. In 2012, her assets in the UK were frozen under EU sanctions, and in 2021, an investigation was launched against her for alleged involvement in war crimes in Syria.
While the Kremlin spokesperson denied claims that the couple is being held under restricted conditions in Moscow, opposition analyst Stanislav Belkovsky commented, "Life in a golden cage in Moscow is no longer satisfying for Asma al-Assad."
The British government has stated that sanctions and travel bans will continue, while the Assad couple has yet to make a statement regarding divorce rumors.
