FIRE IS BEING CONTROLLED
The Port Arthur Police Department announced in a statement regarding the explosion that the incident took place at the refinery. Port Arthur Mayor Charlotte M. Moses stated that there were no injuries reported in the explosion, and that fire crews were quickly dispatched to the scene and efforts to control the fire were ongoing.
CITIZENS WARNED TO "STAY HOME"
Authorities warned citizens living in the western part of the city to stay indoors for safety reasons. Precautions in the area have been increased against potential risks.
CAUSE OF THE EXPLOSION UNDER INVESTIGATION
While the cause of the explosion has not yet been clarified, an investigation has been initiated regarding the incident. Footage shared on social media showed thick smoke rising from the refinery.
REFINERY'S CAPACITY IS STRIKING
According to information on Valero Energy's official website, approximately 770 people work at the refinery, which has a processing capacity of about 435,000 barrels of oil per day.
