In Azerbaijan, a mother who stated that her daughter was not admitted to school because of her headscarf reacted harshly to the practice. Rebelling against what happened, the mother expressed her reaction with the words, "There is room for Armenians, room for Jews, so why is there no room for Islam?"
In Azerbaijan, after the regulation introduced for school uniforms, reports that headscarved students were prevented from entering educational institutions sparked debate.
An Azerbaijani mother who stated that her daughter was not admitted to school because of her headscarf reacted to what happened. The mother, who opposed the practice, said, "There is room for an Armenian, there is room for a Jew, so why is there no room for Islam?" The mother's words added a new dimension to the debates regarding the entry of headscarved students into schools in the country.
A STUDENT HAD ALSO REBELLED BEFORE
Footage showing that headscarved students were not admitted to schools had previously made headlines on social media as well. One of the students who was not allowed to enter the school reacted to the officials at the school gate. The student, who did not remain silent against the practice she faced, expressed her reaction with the words, "Shame on you."
The moments when the student reacted to the officials were recorded with a mobile phone camera, and the footage quickly spread on social media, causing a wide repercussion.
THE HEADSCARF WAS NOT EXPLICITLY BANNED
The Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan, under Prime Minister Ali Asadov, amended the rules regarding school uniforms on September 21. The new regulation did not include a statement directly banning the wearing of the headscarf. However, it was stated that the wearing of clothing contrary to the integrity of the school uniform and the principle of secularism would not be allowed.
While the said provision was considered an implicit ban on the headscarf, after the regulation, reports began to emerge that headscarved students were not admitted to schools.
WHAT HAPPENED AT SCHOOL GATES SPARKED CONTROVERSY
Although there was no explicit ban on the headscarf, reports that students were turned away from school gates increased discussions about how the practice was implemented.
First, a student reacting to officials with the words, "Shame on you," and then the statements of a mother who said her daughter was not admitted to school, brought the debates regarding the entry of headscarved students into educational institutions back to the agenda. The mother's words, "There is room for an Armenian, there is room for a Jew, so why is there no room for Islam?" were the latest example of reactions to what happened.
