A well-known social media influencer mother in Australia is accused of torturing her one-year-old daughter to raise funds and gain followers.
According to a statement from Queensland Police, the 34-year-old woman from Sunshine Coast gave the child unauthorized prescription drugs for three months and shared the baby's alleged battle with a deadly illness on social media. Allegedly, the woman made significant efforts to obtain unauthorized medications and tried to conceal her actions by using another person's medications at home.
The incident came to light after the baby was taken to a hospital in Brisbane with a serious health issue on October 15. An investigation was launched after doctors informed the police.
In a police statement, it was said, "While the child suffers great distress and pain, the woman is alleged to have recorded and shared these moments. It is believed that this content was used to gain monetary donations and followers."
After a comprehensive investigation, detectives from the Child Protection and Investigation Unit arrested the woman at a home in Underwood on Thursday morning. The woman faces charges of poisoning with intent to cause harm (5 counts), preparation to commit an offense with dangerous substances (3 counts), torture, producing child abuse material, and fraud.
Detective Inspector Paul Dalton stated, "It is difficult to find words to describe such crimes. We frequently encounter the worst crimes against children. We will do everything we can to protect the child from harm and bring the perpetrator to justice. There can be no excuse for harming a one-year-old baby in need of care."
The police also stated that the woman raised 60,000 Australian Dollars (approximately 30,500 Pounds) through GoFundMe, and the site is attempting to refund this money.
The woman is expected to appear before a magistrate at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
