During the parade, a newly graduated narcotics detection dog suddenly失控 and leaped onto a rear admiral in the Chilean Navy who was watching the ceremony. An event that took place in Chile on May 7, but only recently came to light with the release of footage, suddenly dominated the country's agenda, bringing up issues of military discipline and various allegations beyond just a tragicomic accident.
NARCOTICS DOG ATTACKS REAR ADMIRAL'S POCKET
A formal graduation ceremony was held for dog teams that completed a rigorous joint training program organized by the Chilean Navy and the Customs Service. While everything proceeded according to military protocol, an unusual move by one of the newly graduated dogs abruptly shattered the ceremony's seriousness.
During the procession past the protocol line in the ceremony area, one of the specially trained dogs, expert in drug detection, suddenly broke control. Despite its handler holding the leash, the K9 narcotics dog lunged forward rapidly, targeting a rear admiral serving in the Chilean Navy who was observing the ceremony.
The dog jumped onto the high-ranking officer and sank its teeth into the admiral's uniform. Amid the bewildered gazes of those around, during the scuffle, the dog tore and ripped the admiral's pants pocket completely off just before being forcibly removed by staff. The stunned admiral was then calmed down with the intervention of other military officials and personnel attending the ceremony.
"WHAT WAS IN HIS POCKET?" DEBATE SHAKES THE COUNTRY
Footage of this unexpected moment quickly became a national topic.
The question of why a dog trained to detect drugs would aggressively attack a high-ranking commander's pocket in particular became both a source of humor and sparked various allegations. Some social media users claimed the admiral was using drugs.
Chilean military officials and the Navy Command have made no official statement regarding whether the admiral was injured or what might have been in his pocket that caught the dog's attention.
