A NEW ERA BEGINS IN LEBANON

The President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, accepted the resignation of the interim Prime Minister Mikati's government and appointed former President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Nawaf Salam as Prime Minister.

Aoun signed three separate decrees appointing Salam to form a government, which is expected to consist of 24 ministers.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In a statement made by the Lebanese Presidency on January 13, it was announced that Aoun had given the task of forming a new government to Nawaf Salam, a Lebanese national and former President of the ICJ, after consultations with the members of parliament. Following his appointment as Prime Minister, Salam also resigned from the ICJ.

In 2022, Salam competed for the prime ministerial seat against the current Prime Minister Najib Mikati. In the parliamentary vote, Salam lost the race, receiving the support of 25 members of parliament. Mikati, on the other hand, was elected to the position of Prime Minister with the support of 54 out of 128 members of parliament during the parliamentary consultations.
