According to flight tracking site Flightradar24, a CRJ-900 regional passenger plane coming from Montreal rapidly struck a vehicle on the runway during landing.
AIRPORT CLOSED, FLIGHTS SUSPENDED
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily halted all flights at the airport following the incident. In a statement, it was noted that flights were prohibited, the situation was being assessed as an emergency, and the duration could be extended.
The website of LaGuardia Airport indicated that incoming flights were redirected to different airports or sent back to their departure points. The FAA also announced in a separate notification sent to pilots that the airport could remain closed until 18:00 GMT.
DAMAGE IMAGES SHARED
Images shared on social media showed significant damage to the nose of the plane following the collision. It is reported that there are many dead and injured in the horrific accident.
TEAMS ON SITE
The New York Fire Department stated that they intervened in the incident involving a plane and a vehicle on the runway, but no additional information regarding the details of the incident was shared. Air Canada and the FAA have not yet responded to requests for comments on the matter.
