Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that a rare mosaic from the Roman Period has been unearthed in excavations at the Ancient City of Aspendos. The piece, which features a depiction of "Young Eurymedon" symbolizing the Eurymedon River at its center, stands out for its high craftsmanship and details, while providing significant scientific data on Roman Period Anatolian mosaic art.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that an important artifact shedding light on Roman Period Anatolian mosaic art has been uncovered during ongoing excavation works at the Ancient City of Aspendos.
In a post on his social media account, Minister Ersoy announced that the mosaic, located on Theater Street in Aspendos, features a depiction of "Young Eurymedon" symbolizing the Eurymedon River, which gives life to the city.
SYMBOLS OF WATER AND FERTILITY ARE INCLUDED
Ersoy stated that the mosaic is enriched with reed leaves, amphora, and fish figures, and noted that the composition reflects a symbolic narrative of water, fertility, and life.
The artifact uncovered during the excavations draws attention with its craftsmanship quality and details.
WILL SHED LIGHT ON ROMAN PERIOD ART
Minister Ersoy emphasized that the mosaic, which stands out with its color transitions created with small tesserae, richness of detail, and high craftsmanship quality, is one of the rare river god depictions in mosaic art.
Experts indicate that the discovery not only reveals Aspendos's artistic heritage but also provides significant scientific data on Roman Period Anatolian mosaic art.
