While surrounding structures were swept away by the floodwaters, a house built with solid foundations and reinforced concrete columns remained standing, drawing attention.
The death toll from the flood disaster that occurred in Nepal on August 26 and spread its impact over a wide area has risen to 987, while there is still no news from 3,916 people. In the disaster zone, where more than 11,800 people have been rescued through helicopter-supported operations, a reinforced concrete structure with a solid foundation surviving the destruction once again highlighted the importance of building safety.
THE GREATEST DESTRUCTION OCCURRED IN CHITWAN
According to the statement made by the Nepal National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), bodies continue to be reached in search and rescue efforts carried out in 8 different regions hit by the floodwaters. The highest loss of life in the disaster was recorded in Chitwan with 321 people. This region was followed by East Nawalparasi with 216 deaths, West Nawalparasi with 170, Nuwakot with 95, Gorkha with 65, Dhading with 55, Tanahun with 38, and Rasuwa with 27 deaths. In the disaster zone, where a total of 279 people were injured, more than 21,000 security personnel are working tirelessly in evacuation and search operations.
HUNDREDS OF FOREIGNERS AND POWER PLANT WORKERS AMONG THE MISSING
In the Rasuwa region, which is the starting point of the disaster and where search efforts are concentrated, 865 people are being sought alone. The fact that 639 hydroelectric power plant workers and 583 foreign nationals are also on the national list of 3,916 missing increases the gravity of the situation.
REINFORCED CONCRETE HOUSE WITH SOLID FOUNDATION DEFIED THE DISASTER
The scene that emerged as the waters receded after the disaster, which claimed the lives of more than a thousand people, proved the vital importance of construction quality. While all of the surrounding buildings with wooden materials, weak frames, and shallow foundations were swept away by the floodwaters, a house built with deep foundations and durable reinforced concrete columns in the region managed to remain standing without any damage from the destruction.
