Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis used arrogant language targeting Turkey while defending their alliance with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Georgiadis, who claimed that the alliance with Israel 'guarantees the freedom of the Greek state against the Turkish threat or any other threat,' made these statements at a time when Athens had reached an agreement to purchase a new air defense system worth 3 billion euros from Israel.
Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, in his speech in parliament, argued that the 3 billion euro deal they made with Israel is important for his country's interests.
GREEK MINISTER'S "TURKISH THREAT" REMARK
Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis spoke in the Greek Parliament. Responding to criticism that he prioritized an alliance with Israel over health policies in his country, Georgiadis also placed Turkey at the center of his remarks. Georgiadis claimed that Greece's strategic alliance with Israel "guarantees the freedom of the Greek state against the Turkish threat or any other threat," and said this is "a very important issue."
BILLIONS OF EUROS SIGNED WITH ISRAEL
The timing of Georgiadis's statements pointing to Turkey also drew attention. The remarks coincided with the period when Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias signed the Achilles Shield agreement in Tel Aviv. Under the agreement, it was reported that Israel would provide Greece with a multi-layered air and ballistic missile defense system and defense infrastructure against unmanned aerial vehicles worth approximately 3 billion euros. The agreement was stated to be the largest defense deal ever conducted between Israel and Greece.
