The White House presented Joe Biden with plans for a potential attack on Iran's nuclear facilities before the inauguration ceremony of the new President of the United States, Donald Trump, on January 20. While the emergence of the plans just before the nuclear agreement talks with Iran drew attention, it was stated that Biden was indecisive about the urgency of the situation.
BIDEN HAS NOT MADE A FINAL DECISION
According to a report in CNN Türk, a secret briefing was held a few weeks ago regarding the presentation. One of the officials stated that the meeting was not based on new intelligence and claimed that Biden had not made a final decision. On the other hand, another source noted that Biden was focused on whether he could justify such a dramatic military attack just weeks before a new president takes office.
Sources suggested that some of Biden's advisors, including Sullivan, believed that weakening Iran's air defense and missile capabilities, as well as significantly weakening Iran's regional proxies, would increase the likelihood of a successful attack and reduce the risk of Iranian retaliation and regional tension.
THE WHITE HOUSE REFUSED TO COMMENT
An American official stated that Sullivan did not advise Biden on this matter, but was only engaged in scenario planning. The White House refused to comment on the issue. Axios noted, "What is interesting, according to a source, is that Biden is focusing on the urgency question and questioning whether Iran is taking steps to justify a dramatic military attack within weeks."
THE TIMING IS STRIKING
The plan came just before the nuclear program talks between Iran and European countries in January. Iran's semi-official news agency ISNA announced on Wednesday that the next round of talks between Iran and three European countries would take place in Geneva on January 13.
Iran held a series of discussions regarding its controversial nuclear program with the UK, France, and Germany in November 2024. These talks, the first since the US elections, occurred in response to a European-backed resolution accusing Tehran of poor cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog. Tehran reacted to the resolution by announcing plans to install more uranium enrichment centrifuges at its enrichment facilities.
