Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan reported that 130 to 273.1 kilograms of rainfall per square meter fell in some parts of the city.

According to a statement from İBB, Aslan made assessments at the İBB Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) in Eyüpsultan regarding the ongoing rainfall in the city.

NORTHERN PARTS AFFECTED

Stating that Istanbul was facing one of the most severe rainfalls of recent years, and that the heavy downpour that began on Tuesday morning, continued all day, and went on throughout the night with increasing intensity negatively affected life in many parts of the city, Aslan reported that, due to the effect of cold air coming from the Balkans and a precipitation system originating from the Central Mediterranean, very high amounts of rainfall were recorded especially around the Bosphorus and in the northern parts of the European Side.

MOST RAIN FELL IN BEYKOZ

Aslan said, "According to our AKOM data, in some of our regions, rainfall of between 130 and 273.1 kilograms per square meter fell. In Beykoz, 273.1 kilograms per square meter, in Sarıyer, 208.1 kilograms, and in Eyüpsultan, 202.8 kilograms of rainfall were measured. In our other districts, the amount of rainfall was between 35 and 120 kilograms. Throughout the night, in some parts of the Anatolian Side, around 45 kilograms of rainfall per square meter fell."

Drawing attention to the fact that this morning the rainfall had largely lost its effect, Aslan emphasized that they expected light rain showers on the Anatolian Side until noon, and that afterwards the rainy system was forecast to leave Istanbul.

"595 OF OUR STRANDED CITIZENS WERE EVACUATED BY TEAMS"

Nuri Aslan, noting that they had received a total of 8,515 reports from the moment the rainfall began until this morning, said, "Our priority has, of course, always been human life. Our teams evacuated 595 of our citizens who were stranded across Istanbul. We reached our citizens who were stranded especially in workplaces, schools, residences, and various facilities in the Göktürk, Kemerburgaz, and Ayazağa areas due to rising stream levels."

Aslan, mentioning that due to weather conditions cancellations or delays in services continued at some points in cable car and sea transportation, pointed out that the highest rainfall of the last 45 years had been recorded.

Aslan noted that Istanbul was facing a disaster.
