With the decision of the Ministry of Interior, Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer was arrested last week as part of a terrorism investigation and sent to prison. Istanbul Deputy Governor Can Aksoy was appointed in place of Özer.
Trustee Can Aksoy today dismissed the Deputy Mayors of the Municipality, Oktay Kılıç, Osman Yalçın, and Murat Düzgün. CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Özgür Çelik made a statement regarding the issue, saying, "The trustee has notified the deputy mayors Oktay Kılıç, Osman Yalçın, and Murat Düzgün that their duties have ended."
THEY HELD THE MEETING IN FRONT OF THE MUNICIPALITY
Meanwhile, today CHP Municipal Council members were supposed to hold a council meeting at the municipality. Members who arrived at the municipality in the morning learned that the group meeting room was locked. Since the CHP members were not allowed inside, they decided to hold the council meeting in front of the municipality.
ÖZGÜR ÇELİK: THE REPUBLICAN PEOPLE'S PARTY IS HERE
CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Özgür Çelik, in his speech at the opening of the meeting, stated, "The Justice and Development Party is taking Turkey's democracy backward every day, dragging Turkey into the darkness of the Middle Ages. The fact that the elected municipal council members are holding this meeting not in the CHP group room inside the municipality building but here, under these conditions, is the clearest indication of where Turkey's democracy has come and where it has been taken in 2024. Finally, I want to express this: Those who lead the citizens of Turkey into hunger, poverty, and misery, those who trample on the constitution every day, those who undermine Turkey's democracy, those who take Turkey's democracy backward should know this well:
The Republican People's Party is here! The Republican People's Party will continue to fight against this authoritarian regime together with our people, our nation. Just as our citizens gave a lesson in democracy against that authoritarian understanding of governance in 2019, just as they gave a lesson in democracy in 2024, in the first election, in the early election, the people of the Republic of Turkey, our nation, will give another lesson in democracy against this authoritarian regime," he said.
THEY HAD A SCUFFLE WITH THE POLICE
There was tension with the police after CHP Municipal Council members were not allowed into Esenyurt Municipality. Çelik and party members had a scuffle when the police did not open the barricades.
ÖZGÜR ÖZEL: IT IS THE DAY TO STAND UP FOR THE FUTURE OF 86 MILLION
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel also reacted to the removal of the CHP sign, stating, "The nation has initiated the process of changing the government with the will it expressed in the local elections. It is the duty of the government to respect the will of the people. The Republican People's Party sign was hung there by the people, and only the people have the authority to change it. The only competitive arena in politics is elections, and the only referee is the nation. Today is the day to stand up for our unity and solidarity, our democracy, that is, the future of 86 million, against this tyranny that does not recognize rights and law," he said.
