Cansever, who was a guest on the #HaberBahane program hosted by Gökay Kalaycıoğlu at the Haberler.com studio 4 years ago, talked about her painful childhood and how she ended up in foreign lands at a young age. The famous artist, who passed away today, said, 'I didn't have a good childhood,' and expressed the poverty she experienced with the words, 'We would take turns wearing a pair of pants with my brother.'
Cansever, who was a guest on the #HaberBahane program hosted by Gökay Kalaycıoğlu in the Haberler.com studio 4 years ago, had recounted the most difficult periods of her life. In the program, the artist, who passed away in Germany, said that she grew up in poverty in Macedonia and that her education was cut short due to economic hardships. Unable to hold back her tears while describing her childhood years, Cansever had said, "I didn't have a good childhood."
SHE COULD ONLY STUDY UNTIL THE 4TH GRADE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL
Stating that she was the youngest of seven siblings, Cansever recounted that her family made a living through agriculture and farming. Saying that her education did not progress regularly due to financial difficulties, the artist used the expressions, "I only went until the 4th grade of primary school. And even then, it was always interrupted."
Stating that she loved reading and was a successful student, Cansever, however, recounted that she sometimes had to go to villages to work due to her family's financial hardship.
Saying, "When there is poverty, you can't study at school," Cansever stated that the school provided children from low-income families with needs such as notebooks, pencils, and books.
"I HAD NO COAT, NO GLOVES, NO SHOES"
Cansever, who recounted that she also experienced great difficulties regarding clothing during her childhood, stated that the winter months were especially very hard for her.
Saying, "I had no coat, no gloves, no shoes," the artist expressed that she felt the lack she experienced even more when she compared her own life with the opportunities the children around her had.
Cansever emphasized that the children of her Macedonian neighbors came to school in winter clothes, while she did not have such opportunities.
"WE WORE ONE PAIR OF TROUSERS TAKING TURNS WITH MY SIBLING"
Another expression Cansever used while describing the poverty of her childhood years revealed the extent of the hardship she experienced.
Saying that she and her sibling wore the same pair of trousers taking turns, the artist expressed what she went through with these words:
"For example, we had one pair of jeans. He would wear them in the morning. I would wear them in the afternoon. We both wore the same trousers, and that's how we went to school."
Stating that she also wore clothes left by her older siblings during her childhood, Cansever stated that since she worked in the field, she had no other choice in clothing either.
"I WENT TO FOREIGN LANDS AT A YOUNG AGE"
Cansever, who recounted that she started working from an early age to contribute to her family's livelihood, explained that she had to go to Europe at a young age.
Saying, "At a young age, at a very young age, when I was 16-17, I went to foreign lands in Europe," the artist recounted trying to stand on her own feet alone abroad.
Cansever said that she sent most of the money she earned to her family in Macedonia to support them and expressed that her priority in those years was her family with the words, "As long as we send something to our family. So that they don't go hungry, so that they don't run out of firewood."
"I DIDN'T SEE THE SKY FOR 15 YEARS"
One of the heaviest trials in Cansever's life was the serious health problems she experienced in later years. The artist, who recounted living a bedridden life for many years due to her illness, summarized the process she went through in a single sentence:
"For 15 years, I didn't see the sky."
Cansever, who recounted that she couldn't lie flat for many years and had to sleep curled up out of necessity, said that her daily life was also severely restricted due to her health problems.
The artist recounted that even when people wanted to take photos with her, she couldn't stand and had to sit down.
These statements made by Cansever years ago have once again brought to the agenda the deep traces left on the artist's life by the poverty, exile, and health problems she encountered in different periods of her life, starting from her childhood.
