According to Israel's Channel 12 television, Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered the army to carry out a new attack on Iran ahead of Tuesday's general election. Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir objected, requesting a wet-signed document concerning the order out of concern that the step could lead to a miscalculation. Netanyahu denied the crisis claims, saying, "It's all nonsense."
It was reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the army to carry out a new attack against Iran ahead of the general election to be held on Tuesday, but Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir objected, demanding a wet-signed document regarding the order out of concern that it could lead to a "miscalculation."
In a report by Israel's Channel 12 television, it was stated that an "unprecedented crisis" had occurred between Netanyahu and Zamir over Iran.
It was reported that Zamir, who had received instructions regarding Iran from the political level in recent days, demanded that a serious assessment meeting be held for the step in question and asked Netanyahu for a "wet-signed document."
CONCERN OVER MISCALCULATION IN THE MILITARY COMMAND
Speaking to Channel 12, a military official said that behind the crisis between the two lay "the Iran issue" and "the concern of Zamir and the military command echelon that the political will might drag Israel into a miscalculation against Iran just before the election."
Another senior security official, regarding Zamir's stance against new attacks on Iran, used the expression, "History will not forget this role that Zamir has assumed in recent days."
While it was noted that the crisis between the two had escalated within the last 24 hours, it was also reported that the atmosphere at the meeting held on Sunday at Palmahim Air Base was "extremely tense and cold."
It was reported in the press that Zamir said at a recent closed-door meeting, "At the moment, before the election, we do not see any operational indication that would require attacking Iran. If we decide that an attack on Iran is necessary, we will carry it out."
NETANYAHU DENIED CRISIS CLAIM
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement on Channel 14 television, denied that there was a crisis with Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir regarding the launching of new attacks against Iran.
Arguing that there was no disagreement between him and Chief of Staff Zamir, Netanyahu said, "It's all nonsense," and continued:
"Someone is trying to stir up a fight here. They are trying to cover up the statements made personally by Chief of Staff Zamir, Israeli military Military Intelligence Chief Shlomi Binder and Mossad Director Roman Gofman that Iran is trying to interfere in the elections."
In a speech on the northern border of the occupied West Bank, Netanyahu had claimed that they had received intelligence indicating that there were threats of attack against the country ahead of the upcoming elections.
PRE-ELECTION OPERATION CLAIMS
Meanwhile, claims had come to the agenda in Israeli public opinion and the international press that before the elections, Netanyahu's government might launch a new military operation against Iran, Lebanon, or the Gaza Strip.
It had been alleged that US President Trump and Netanyahu discussed in the first week of October the possibility of launching a new attack on Iran before the general elections to be held in Israel on October 27 and the congressional midterm elections to be held in the US on November 3.
