After a woman named Mekiye Akyel, a mother of four, went missing in Siirt one day after divorcing her husband, her ex-husband and his family were arrested on suspicion of her murder. Her sister, Halime Pilğir, made horrifying allegations, stating that on the night her sister disappeared, the tandoor oven in the ex-husband’s house burned until morning, and when suspicious villagers asked, they were told "We are making roast meat." The grieving sister made shocking allegations in the case that was widely covered on Müge Anlı's Tatlı Sert program broadcast on ATV, claiming that her sister was burned alive in a tandoor oven and that four women in the same village were killed in a similar manner.
DISAPPEARED THE DAY AFTER DIVORCE
Mekiye Akyel, a 30-year-old mother of four living in Siirt, went missing just one day after divorcing her husband on October 17, 2024. In the investigation launched, security forces examining HTS records determined that Akyel's mobile phone last gave a signal in the same area as her ex-husband and his family. As the investigation deepened under suspicion of murder, Mekiye Akyel's ex-husband İsa Güç, father-in-law İhsan Güç, and brother-in-law Hüseyin Güç were arrested in February 2026 on charges of 'intentional killing' and sent to prison.
SYSTEMATIC VIOLENCE AND THREAT CAMPAIGN
Sister Halime Pilğir, stating that her sibling suffered severe violence throughout her marriage, said that when Mekiye was just three months into marriage, her husband wanted to marry a second woman, and when she tried to flee, she was beaten and her arm was broken. She emphasized that her sister, placed in the Sixt Women's Shelter, was constantly threatened by her ex-husband and his family around the shelter. Pilğir recounted that on the day of the divorce, her ex-husband threatened her family while dropping Mekiye off at her father's house, saying, 'Take care of your daughter and son. My brothers and brothers-in-law will kill you.' She stated that she last reached her sister through her children and the phone went off immediately after hearing the ex-husband's voice in the background.
"THEY SAID 'WE'RE MAKING ROAST'"
Sister Pilğir recalled the statements of a witness who connected to Müge Anlı's program and shared a horrifying claim. Stating that the tandoor oven belonging to the ex-husband's family never went out until morning on the night her sister disappeared, Pilğir said that when suspicious villagers asked, the family replied, 'We are making roast meat.' Emphasizing that it was unusual for the region to have a tandoor burning all night, Pilğir expressed their belief that her sister was killed by being burned in the tandoor, and that the unfortunate woman's body has still not been found.
"4 WOMEN KILLED IN SIMILAR MANNER IN THE SAME VILLAGE"
Claiming that the scandal was not limited to her sister, Pilğir alleged that another woman named Saynur Süyüncü, a mother of four from the same village, was also burned to death in 2021 and the incident was covered up. She stated that they convinced the Süyüncü family to bring the case back to the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Stating that she will not give up her fight for justice, Pilğir said she was threatened by being sent photos of machetes and pressured to withdraw from the case. The investigation into the incident continues from multiple angles.
