All details of the indictment prepared following the investigation into the armed attack at Ayser Çalık Middle School in Kahramanmaraş, where 10 people lost their lives and 15 students were injured, have been revealed. Prison sentences have been requested for the father, a police chief inspector, and the mother of the 8th-grade student who carried out the attack.
An indictment was issued against the father and mother of the attacker named İsa Aras Mersinli, who carried out the school attack in Kahramanmaraş in which nine students and one teacher were killed.
In the indictment prepared by the Kahramanmaraş Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the parents of İsa Aras Mersinli, an 8th grade student who died during the incident and was the perpetrator of the bloody attack that took place at Ayser Çalık Secondary School in the Onikişubat district on April 15, 2026, at around 1:20 PM, were included as suspects. For the detained suspect father Uğur Mersinli, it was requested to file a lawsuit on charges of murder with possible intent against 10 people, causing injury with possible intent of different natures against 15 people, and violation of Law No. 6136. For mother Peyman Pınar Mersinli, it was requested to be punished for the crime of causing the death and injury of more than one person by conscious negligence.
ONE TEACHER AND 9 STUDENTS LOST THEIR LIVES
In the attack, teacher Ayla Kara and 9 students lost their lives, while 15 students were injured either by firearm wounds or by falling from a height while trying to escape the attack. As part of the investigation, crime scene investigation reports, security camera footage, autopsy and health reports, digital material examinations, witness and victim statements, and criminal reports were added to the file as evidence.
84 CARTRIDGE CASES AND 5 HANDGUNS FOUND AT THE SCENE
In the crime scene investigation, intense blood stains and tissue fragments were detected in the corridor on the first floor of the school and in classrooms 5/D and 5/E. At the end of the corridor, 5 handguns, 2 empty magazines, and a bag believed to have carried the weapons were found. Teams collected a total of 84 cartridge cases from the scene. As a result of criminal investigations, it was determined that the bullets hitting the deceased and injured individuals were fired from these weapons. The indictment stated that all weapons used in the attack were licensed under the name of father Uğur Mersinli.
In the search carried out at the common residence of the suspects, numerous handguns, rifles, magazines, and ammunition were also seized. The indictment stated that no locked or password-protected safe was found to ensure the security of the weapons, and the weapons were stored in "Maraş chest" type wooden boxes without security mechanisms, easily opened by hand, or openly in the bedroom wardrobe. The prosecutor's office stated that this situation allowed the attacker easy access to the weapons, while father Uğur Mersinli argued in his statement that he kept the weapons in boxes, separate from the magazines and ammunition.
ATTACK PLANNED IN DETAIL
In detailed examinations of the attacker's mobile phone and computer, sketches of the school drawn with a ballpoint pen were found. It was determined that his mobile phone contained photos taken with his father's weapons on different dates, as well as photos taken the day before the attack showing the weapons lined up on the bed. Furthermore, numerous search records regarding school attacks in different countries, attackers, improvised explosive devices, and violent images were found in the digital materials.
The indictment stated that a document dated April 11, 2026, containing detailed plans on how to carry out the attack, was found on the attacker's computer. It was noted that this document contained statements regarding the preparation of weapons and magazines, closing the school exits, arming in the toilets, and entering classrooms to open fire. The prosecutor's office assessed that the content of the document and the manner in which the attack occurred were generally in perfect harmony. Additionally, it was determined that the attacker wrote to some social media users that he would carry out an attack on the school, and it was decided to conduct a separate investigation to investigate the connections of these users to the incident.
TAKEN TO THE POLICE SHOOTING RANGE 2 DAYS BEFORE THE INCIDENT
One of the most striking details in the indictment was the shooting range footage. It was stated that the attacker went to the shooting range belonging to the Kahramanmaraş Provincial Police Department with his father Uğur Mersinli only 2 days before the incident. The footage showed the attacker firing one of the handguns he also used in the incident, and his father recording these moments with his mobile phone. In the statement of the shooting range officer, it was stated that the father said his son had used weapons before. The prosecutor's office emphasized that the attacker's method of loading, cocking, and using the weapons showed that he was familiar with the weapons before the incident and had sufficient experience in their use.
Upon examining past communication records and security cameras, it was determined that the attacker went directly to school after leaving his home on the day of the incident and did not contact anyone along the route. It was noted that no evidence was obtained regarding the involvement of a third party in the attack through incitement, assistance, or any other means, and there was no connection to a terrorist or criminal organization.
PSYCHOLOGICAL HELP WARNINGS IGNORED
The indictment also revealed that the family was repeatedly warned about the child's psychological problems. It was stated that the attacker attended a total of 32 individual interviews at the school guidance service in different years. According to records, although parents were informed in 2022 and 2024 that the child needed psychological support and should be referred to a hospital, no hospital application was made.
It was reported that the attacker had previously engaged in behaviors such as self-harm, strangling his throat with a bag strap, sticking a pen into his hand, tearing books, and having crying fits. It was stated that after the attacker scratched his arm with a sharp object in December 2025, he was evaluated in the hospital and regular child psychiatry follow-up was recommended, but no application was made to the outpatient clinic. After the last interview at a private counseling center, psychiatric support was also recommended, and the attacker's next appointment was scheduled for exactly the day of the incident, April 15, at 4:00 PM.
NON-PROSECUTION DECISION FOR THE PERSON WHO STOPPED THE ATTACKER
The prosecutor's office assessed that Uğur Mersinli, who is a chief police inspector, did not take necessary precautions despite knowing his child's psychological condition, self-harming behaviors, and interest in weapons. It was stated that the father allowed the attacker to use weapons by taking him to the shooting range, kept numerous weapons at home in easily accessible form, and did not supervise his digital activities, arguing that he was in a position to foresee the resulting consequences, and requested his punishment within the scope of the provisions on possible intent. It was stated that Anne Peyman Pınar Mersinli did not submit health applications despite warnings, and although she foresaw the danger, she did not show the necessary care, and was requested to be punished for causing death and injury by conscious negligence. Both suspects denied the charges.
The indictment also included a decision regarding Necmettin Bekçi, who entered the school during the attack and attempted to neutralize the assailant. It was stated that Bekçi hit the assailant's leg once with a knife he found on the ground, and according to the autopsy report, the assailant died from major vascular damage and blood loss due to this sharp instrument injury. The prosecutor's office evaluated that Bekçi acted with the aim of stopping the attack and protecting others' lives, considered the situation within the scope of self-defense provisions, and decided that there was no need for prosecution. The trial of the detained suspects Uğur Mersinli and Peyman Pınar Mersinli will begin after the relevant heavy criminal court accepts the indictment.
