China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, responded to U.S. President Trump's claims that the Panama Canal is managed by China. Fu Cong described the allegations as unfounded.

China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Fu Cong stated that the claims made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding China managing the Panama Canal are "baseless."

RESPONSE TO TRUMP'S CLAIMS

Fu held a press conference at the UN as the presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC) passed to China this month. Responding to journalists' questions about U.S.-China relations, Fu countered Trump's claim that the Chinese manage the Panama Canal, stating, "I believe this accusation directed at China is completely unfounded."

Fu emphasized, "Let me clarify that China has not participated in the management and operation of the Panama Canal and has never interfered in canal affairs. China respects Panama's sovereignty over the canal and recognizes the canal as a permanent, neutral international passage."

WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. President Trump, in his first speech after taking office, also addressed the previously raised issue of "taking back the Panama Canal," stating, "China is operating the Panama Canal. We didn't give it to China; we gave it to Panama, and we are taking it back."
