China's new Y-8 electronic systems test aircraft was spotted in flight. The aircraft, expected to replace the old Tu-204 test platform, is assessed to be testing new technologies, including radar systems developed for unmanned aerial vehicles. Unusual equipment mounted on the aircraft's wing drew attention.
A Y-8 type aircraft, stated to be China's new test platform in the field of military aviation, was spotted in the sky. In the approximately 8-second footage, the four-engine aircraft is seen performing a flight and carrying some elements on its fuselage and wings that differ from the standard Y-8 configuration.
In the video, the different configurations under the wings and around the fuselage are particularly noteworthy. Although the image quality is not sufficient to definitively determine the technical specifications of the equipment in question, the aircraft is assessed to be configured for special test missions.
WILL TEST ADVANCED ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS
According to shared information, the new Y-8 will be used in airborne tests of the electronic and radar systems developed by China. It is stated that among the technologies tested on the aircraft, radar systems planned for use in unmanned aerial vehicles may also be included.
One of the most striking details of the new platform is a different component mounted on the wing. There is no definitive information about which system this part belongs to or exactly for what purpose it is used.
WILL REPLACE THE OLD TU-204
It is stated that the Tu-204 test platform, which China previously used for similar work, is approaching the end of its service life, and the new Y-8 has begun to take over the duties of this aircraft.
The new test aircraft is expected to enable China's radar, electronic warfare, sensor, and other aviation systems under development to be tested under real flight conditions.
