While the mother was arrested, a judicial control decision was issued for the father.
In Kahramanmaraş, a baby murder committed 16 years ago has been solved through the meticulous work of police teams. The details that emerged in the case, which had remained unsolved for years—the baby girl and the mother-in-law's pressure—brought the behind-the-scenes of the incident to light.
16-YEAR-OLD FILE REOPENED
The body of a baby was found in an empty plot of land in the Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş on December 9, 2010. In the autopsy conducted after the incident, it was assessed that the baby died as a result of her mouth and nose being covered. Despite the years that passed, those responsible for the murder could not be identified. Teams of the Public Security Branch Directorate of the Provincial Police Department, which took action under the coordination of the Kahramanmaraş Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, re-examined the file that had remained unsolved for 16 years.
8,369 PEOPLE EXAMINED ONE BY ONE
Police teams launched a comprehensive effort to solve the murder. Based on information obtained from hospitals across Kahramanmaraş, a list of 8,369 people was created. The teams examined the people on the list and also conducted field research in the area where the baby's lifeless body was found. As a result of the information gathered and the assessments made, the identities of the suspects were determined. In the operation, the baby's mother R.Ş., father İ.Ş., and maternal grandmother D.Ş. were captured.
SHE LEFT HER IN AN EMPTY PLOT BECAUSE IT WAS A GIRL
The most striking detail of the investigation emerged from the mother's statement. Suspect R.Ş. confessed that because the baby she gave birth to was a girl and due to pressure from her mother-in-law, immediately after birth she wrapped her baby in a piece of cloth and left her in an empty plot near her home.
MOTHER ARRESTED, FATHER RELEASED UNDER JUDICIAL CONTROL
After proceedings at the police station, the suspects were referred to judicial authorities. The court decided to arrest the mother, R.Ş. A judicial control decision was imposed on the baby's father, İ.Ş. No further information was provided in the statement regarding the judicial status of the mother-in-law D.Ş., who was captured in the operation. The Ministry of Interior stated that efforts to solve unsolved murders continue with determination and congratulated the police teams and the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office involved in the investigation.
