A new draft has been prepared to amend the Market Law in order to lower vegetable and fruit prices. The draft includes imposing an obligation on chain markets to sell domestic vegetables and fruits, applying quotas on imports of bananas, garlic, and lemons, and digitally monitoring wholesale markets. The draft is expected to be submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey as a bill in the coming days.

A new legal regulation aiming to reorganize the process of vegetables and fruit from field to shelf is on the agenda. The regulation aims to reduce prices and ensure that producers receive the reward for their labor.

4 MINISTRIES WORKED TOGETHER

According to TGRT Haber's report, the draft was prepared through the joint work of the Ministries of Trade, Agriculture and Forestry, Treasury and Finance, and Labor and Social Security. The draft is expected to be submitted to Parliament as a bill in the coming days.

LOCAL PRODUCT OBLIGATION FOR CHAIN MARKETS

The draft envisages imposing an obligation on chain markets to sell domestic vegetables and fruit and supporting this practice with tax incentives. In addition, it is stated that quota practices restricting imports of bananas, garlic and lemons may come onto the agenda.

AIMING TO DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF COOPERATIVES

The regulation aims to strengthen agricultural cooperatives and reduce the number of intermediaries between producers and consumers. There are 8,933 agricultural cooperatives across Turkey. In the short term, the goal is to double this number.

DIGITAL TRACKING PERIOD IN WHOLESALE MARKETS

The draft also includes monitoring transactions in wholesale markets in a digital environment and tightening inspections. It is planned to increase the responsibilities of administrative personnel in wholesale markets in data transfer, stock tracking and food safety inspections. With these steps, the aim is to prevent unregistered trade and monitor price formation more closely.
