Etimesgut Municipality, led by Erdal Beşikçioğlu from the Republican People's Party (CHP), has decided not to organize a commemoration event on the anniversary of the treacherous coup attempt on July 15th.
It has been 8 years since the epic popular struggle against the coup attempt of the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization on July 15, 2016. While the day is commemorated with various events throughout the country, a controversial decision has been made by the CHP-led Etimesgut Municipality.
THEY WILL NOT ORGANIZE ANY EVENTS
Etimesgut Municipality, which had previously decided to organize various events in the district on July 2nd for the Zumba Festival and on July 20th for World Chess Day, has now decided not to organize any events for the July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.
COST-SAVING MEASURES WERE CITED AS THE REASON
The municipality, which made this decision citing cost-saving measures, stated in its decision text: "The file referred to our Commissions jointly by the Municipal Council on 03/06/2024 and numbered 181 has been examined. As a result of the examination and discussions on the subject, it has been deemed appropriate by our Commissions' report dated 28/06/2024 and numbered 22, which is submitted to the Honorable Council, that no event will be held by our Municipality as various events will be organized by the Governorship and District Governorship for the Commemoration Events of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day."
ONE OF THE BIGGEST RESISTANCES HAPPENED HERE
During the coup attempt, the coup plotters who took control of the command ordered the armored vehicles loaded with ammunition from the Armored Units in Etimesgut to be deployed on the streets of Ankara to establish control. However, two tanks sent to the area where the AK Party Headquarters and the Gendarmerie General Command are located had to return to their units as a result of the resistance of the citizens. One citizen was martyred and 7 citizens were injured during this incident.
FREE SPORTS COURSES WERE MADE PAID
In addition, last month, the sports hall where 8,500 students received free sports training as part of a project carried out jointly by the Public Education Center, Provincial Sports Directorate, and Etimesgut Municipality during the term of former Etimesgut Mayor Enver Demirel, was subjected to a monthly fee of 750 Turkish liras after the municipality came under the administration of Erdal Beşikçioğlu from the CHP. The Public Education Center and Provincial Sports Directorate withdrew the trainers allocated to the project, stating that the service provided to the public by Etimesgut Municipality should be free.
