The number of deaths in Nigeria due to the deadly Lassa fever outbreak this year has risen to 190. Officials say the increase in the death rate has reached alarming levels and have warned the public to avoid contact with rats and other rodents.
The number of people who have died this year due to Lassa fever, a disease transmitted from animals to humans in Nigeria, has risen to 190. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control announced that the outbreak continues to spread across different states.
DEATH RATE INCREASING
Officials reported that the death rate linked to the disease has increased from 19.1 percent to 25.2 percent compared to the same period last year. Although there is a decline in the number of new cases, late reporting of cases and infections among healthcare workers are causing concern.
TRANSMITTED BY RATS
Lassa fever, transmitted through contact with rat feces and potentially spreading from person to person, can cause deadly hemorrhagic fever. Authorities have warned citizens to avoid contact with rodents.
