Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who rivaled Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential primaries and whose term will end in January, said that the Iran war and rising gasoline prices have created a "huge burden" for Republican candidates in the congressional midterm elections. Recalling Trump's promise to end wars, DeSantis warned that if the conflicts continue, the 2028 elections will also be "very difficult" for Republicans.
Ron DeSantis, the Republican Governor of Florida in the US, stated that the US attacks on Iran have placed a “huge burden” on the Republican Party.
DeSantis, who was unable to run for a third consecutive term, touched in a radio program in Florida near the end of his term on the costs of the US attacks on Iran that are reflected in the country’s politics ahead of the congressional midterm elections.
“THE IRAN WAR IS A HUGE BURDEN FOR REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES”
Florida Governor DeSantis said that the Iran war and the gasoline prices rising because of it are a “huge burden” for Republican candidates in this midterm election period.
DeSantis said, “We have to be honest. Gasoline prices are higher. This affects people, especially the working class, and prices are rising further because of this conflict. That is a fact.”
Warning Republicans not to “ignore” the realities of the war’s effect on prices, DeSantis commented, “If you cannot admit this to voters, it means you are manipulating them, and they will not listen to you on other issues either.”
“IF THE IRAN WAR CONTINUES, THE 2028 ELECTIONS WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT”
Recalling that US President Donald Trump ran his election campaign with the promise to end wars, DeSantis indicated that if the Iran war continues until the end of Trump’s term, the 2028 elections will be “very difficult” for Republicans.
Stating that if they emerge defeated from the midterm elections, the Republican Party may have to change some of its policies, the Florida Governor listed these policies as “attitudes toward artificial intelligence, data centers, and big technology companies.”
HE HAD RUN AGAINST TRUMP IN THE PRIMARIES
DeSantis, who was a rival to Trump in the most recent presidential primaries in the US, later withdrew from that candidacy and, in the subsequent period, campaigned alongside other Republicans for Trump to win the election.
