Prof. Bektaş, who stated that the earthquake that occurred in Bursa does not pose a threat to Istanbul, said, "Bursa is threatened by multiple faults. Since the earthquake parameters of the surrounding faults are also uncertain, there has been an increase in the earthquake risk for Bursa."
An earthquake of magnitude 4 occurred in the Nilüfer district of Bursa. The tremor, which occurred at a depth of approximately 10 km, was also felt in Istanbul and surrounding provinces.
BURSA GOVERNORATE MADE A STATEMENT
In a statement made by the Bursa Governorate regarding the earthquake, it was stated, "An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 has occurred in our province, with its epicenter in the Nilüfer district. So far, no negative reports have been received regarding the earthquake."
WILL IT TRIGGER THE BIG ISTANBUL EARTHQUAKE?
The earthquake that occurred in Bursa and was felt in Istanbul has raised questions about whether it will trigger the anticipated Big Istanbul Earthquake. Retired Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş from the Department of Geological Engineering at Karadeniz Technical University made statements to Haberler.com regarding the issue.
"THE RISK HAS INCREASED FOR BURSA, NOT ISTANBUL"
Stating that the earthquake poses no threat to Istanbul, Bektaş said, "After the 1999 earthquake, seismic activity increased in the Gemlik Gulf and Manyas line along the North Anatolian Fault. Bursa is threatened not only by the earthquakes that occurred in 1855 and the fault segment that produces earthquakes greater than 7, but many known and unknown faults also pose a threat. Since the earthquake parameters of surrounding faults are also uncertain, there has been an increase in earthquake risk for Bursa."
