Diyar Gündüz, who was sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison in Germany for drug trafficking and aggravated assault, escaped with the help of two masked individuals while being taken for a doctor's examination. In the incident, in which prison officers were neutralized, Gündüz removed his ankle shackles and fled on an electric scooter. After the escape, it was claimed that the shackles could be opened with a key sold online for less than 10 euros.

Diyar Gündüz, who was sentenced to 17 years in prison in Essen, Germany, for drug trafficking and aggravated assault, escaped from the healthcare facility where he was taken for a doctor's examination. After two masked individuals attacked prison officers at the medical office, Gündüz removed his ankle shackles and fled the scene on an electric scooter.

MASKED INDIVIDUALS ATTACKED THE OFFICERS

According to a report by the German newspaper BILD, Diyar Gündüz, who was being held at Essen Prison, one of the country's most secure prisons, was taken to a doctor's office in the city center accompanied by two correctional officers.

When they reached the stairwell of the medical office, two masked individuals attacked the officers accompanying Gündüz. After the officers were incapacitated, Gündüz removed his ankle shackles and fled the building.

It was stated that Gündüz fled the scene on an electric scooter, while the two people who helped him fled in different directions.

ALL THREE ARE STILL AT LARGE

Following the incident, German police launched an operation to capture Gündüz and the people who helped him escape.

A police spokesperson speaking to BILD said, "Both the escaped prisoner and the people who helped him are still at large."

DID HE OPEN THE SHACKLES WITH A 10-EURO KEY?

The most striking claim regarding the escape concerned how Gündüz removed his ankle shackles.

According to a report by the German Press Agency (DPA), North Rhine-Westphalia Justice Minister Benjamin Limbach briefed lawmakers on the incident at the state parliament's Legal Affairs Committee.

It was alleged that Limbach said the shackles placed on Gündüz's ankles did not have a personalized locking system and that a universal key capable of opening the same model of shackles was used.

It was noted that such keys can be purchased online for under 10 euros.

SECURITY MEASURES IN PRISONS ARE BEING REVIEWED

Following the escape, the security measures applied when prisoners are taken outside the prison have also been placed under review.

The North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Justice stated that current procedures are being reassessed and said, "Within the scope of this review, the issue of the use of shackles will also be addressed."
