Israeli President Isaac Herzog assigned the task of forming the new government on Sunday to Yashar Party leader Gadi Eisenkot, after neither his own bloc nor Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's alliance secured a majority in the general elections.
Israeli President Herzog formally tasked Gadi Eisenkot with forming a government.
EISENKOT HAS 28 DAYS
According to a report by Yedioth Ahronoth, under Israel's Basic Law, Eisenkot has 28 days to form a government. Herzog can extend this period by up to 14 days if needed.
Herzog announced on Saturday his decision to assign Eisenkot the task of forming the new government after consultations with political party groups in parliament.
In a statement from the President's Office, it was reported that groups representing 67 lawmakers in the 120-seat Knesset proposed Eisenkot, while groups representing 46 lawmakers supported Netanyahu. A party group with seven lawmakers abstained from proposing any candidate.
