Mehmet Ali Güler, the grandfather of national football player Arda Güler, who plays for Real Madrid, follows the successes of his grandson, who has been shaped by his love for football since childhood, from his home in Mengen, Bolu, while watching television.
Mehmet Ali Güler, who lives in the village of Hayranlar, told AA correspondent that Arda's interest in football started when he was 3-4 years old, and he described his grandson as a "ball addict."
Güler explained that when Arda came to the village, he would always play with the ball, saying, "He would come to the village with two balls. He wouldn't eat or do anything until they burst. When they burst, he would come home; we would understand that the ball had burst. Arda has been sleeping and waking up with a ball since childhood. Every time he came to my place during his childhood, he would break 1-2 of my lamps. It was the same in Ankara. We wouldn't say anything because we loved him. Arda's life is the ball. There is nothing else in his life."
Grandfather Güler stated that Arda, who started football in Etimesgut, caught the attention of big clubs after being selected for the U16 National Team at Gençlerbirliği, where he went after changing a few clubs.
"THE PHONE DOESN'T STOP RINGING"
Güler expressed that Arda, who shines at Fenerbahçe with his talent and hard work, is doing well at Real Madrid and is very much loved by the head coach and the club president, saying, "There are news in the press saying 'Arda will go to Inter, he will go to Milan.' The club president has announced this as well. Real Madrid is not letting this child go, and they won't. Arda will be there until his 6 years are up, but what happens after that, we can't know. I hope his future is bright. My only wish is that God keeps him from injuries. May God protect him from the evil eye."
Grandfather Güler emphasized that his grandson is the pride of their family, Mengen, and Turkey, stating, "Today he is shaking Turkey. When Arda scores a goal, I swear my phone doesn't stop ringing until the morning. Calls come from everywhere. He is such a beloved child."
Güler mentioned that he last met Arda at Gölcük Nature Park in Bolu last week, saying, "When I heard Arda was coming, I went to visit. We didn't have a long meeting; I probably saw him for about 40 minutes. I hugged him and kissed him. We had breakfast together. I don't know when I will have the chance to see him again."
Güler also talked about how he goes to league matches in Spain whenever he gets the chance, stating that he never misses national matches and eagerly awaits the period when national matches will be held.
"I CALL HIM BEFORE THE MATCHES"
Güler noted that Arda sometimes calls him before certain matches, saying, "When I call him before the matches, I can't reach him; I can only reach him via message. When he calls me, we talk. I ask, 'Are you in the starting 11?' Sometimes he says, 'It's not certain.' Sometimes he says he is in the 11, and sometimes he says, 'I will come in later.' League matches start at 11:00 PM. We watch on television until 1-2 AM. My wife and I are always in front of the TV. That feeling is indescribable. Especially when he scores a goal, I cry out of joy."
"HE SAYS HE WILL BE NUMBER ONE"
Güler shared conversations about his grandson's dreams, saying, "Arda's only dream... I think he has already come there. He says, 'I will be a star, I will be number one.' I say, 'Son, you are already number one. Turkey knows you, the world knows you, everyone knows you. There is no one who doesn't know you.' He still says, 'I will be number one.' He probably wants to surpass Ronaldo, Messi, and so on. I think he will. If a child comes this far at this age, he will probably become even more famous in the future."
Grandfather Güler also emphasized how much he loves his grandson Arda, saying, "He knows how much I love him. May God protect him and be his helper. He is truly our family pride. Arda has no expectations from anyone. His only expectation is prayer. He says, 'Pray for me, grandmother, grandfather.' during our phone conversations." and concluded his words.
