Every day, 1200 regime soldiers are surrendering by stepping on Assad's portrait.

Following the collapse of the regime in Syria, the practice continues where regime soldiers are registering by surrendering their weapons at the "identity verification and reconciliation centers" established by the temporary administration. Approximately 1,200 people wait in line each day, after which they leave their weapons aside, enter the building by stepping on a portrait of Assad, and complete their procedures. In fact, even upon exiting, their photos are taken along with their documents.

The recruitment point in the Mezze district of Damascus, the capital of Syria, is being used as a reconciliation and identification center established by the new administration. Many people are waiting in line at the iron gate outside the facility. Those who register in line are allowed inside after their names are called.

At the entrance of the center, those waiting in line first set aside their weapons if they have any, and enter the building by stepping on a picture of Bashar al-Assad. Inside, representatives of Syria's new administration keep records of individuals' identity information, where they live, and the positions they held during the regime period. They are photographed upon exit along with the documents given to them. It is stated that new identities valid for three months are issued to those who register, allowing them to move safely within the country.

ABOUT 1200 PEOPLE SURRENDER WEAPONS DAILY IN DAMASCUS

Officer Walid Abdurabu, responsible for the "identification and reconciliation" centers opened by the temporary administration's Ministry of Interior in Damascus, stated that these centers were established for soldiers, police, and those working in the army and security bureaucracy to introduce themselves and surrender their assigned weapons and other equipment.

"WE ISSUE A TEMPORARY CARD FOR THREE MONTHS"

Abdurabu explained that not only soldiers and police but also elements known as "shabiha," which the Assad regime used as paramilitary forces, come to these centers. "They come here, surrender their weapons, and we issue them a temporary card valid for three months. During this period, they can use it as identification," he said. Abdurabu noted that approximately 1200 to 1500 people apply to each center in Damascus daily, stating, "Regime elements and those working here can return to their jobs and normal lives over time if they have not been involved in bloodshed. Those who come here are also the children of the Syrian people. The regime misled them. Some of these people used their weapons against the public, and the regime gave them unlimited power. This was far from the rule of law and accountability," he said.

"DON'T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY"

Abdurabu pointed out that the elements of the collapsing regime, who are now surrendering their weapons, used them "in a disorganized, illegal, and immoral manner to kill, commit violence, and seize homes against the public." He stated, "We want to open a new page and build a new Syria. I call on all armed elements of the regime: they should come to this reconciliation center and lay down their weapons so that they do not miss this opportunity. If they are holding onto their weapons, it means they intend to use them against the public or the government for banditry. This will not be allowed."

"I HAVE NOT ACHIEVED ANYTHING PERSONALLY IN MY 23-YEAR SERVICE"

Those who served in the army and security during the regime complained about being unable to live on their salaries. Ibrahim Dib (42), who stated that he worked as a police officer under the Ministry of Interior for 23 years during the old regime, said that the public was treated with an "extremist" attitude during that time, which is why he participated in the normalization and reconciliation initiative. When asked if he had any regrets about his service during the regime, Dib said, "We could not use words like resistance and determination. There was a sectarian order. Only a certain group could rise. My greatest regret is that I did not achieve anything personally in my 23 years of service. I still live in a rented place. We were the weakest link. The entire public knows that the Ministry of Interior, security, salaries, and positions were the lowest tier. There was only favoritism for certain leaders." Dib mentioned that in recent days, the escape from the regime has increased, with one person remaining in a place where ten should be, and those in high positions who defend their interests continue their duties.

"THE SYRIAN PEOPLE WERE NOT LIVING, ONLY THOSE AT THE TOP WERE LIVING"

Ali Asi from Latakia, who served in the Assad regime's army and was on the front lines, stated that he surrendered his weapon, saying, "The revolution is the success of the Syrian people, and the oppression, tyranny, and economic hardships that people faced have come to an end." Asi noted that the Syrian people, with all their sects, will rebuild the country, stating, "The country needed a new economy and life. The Syrian people were not living; only those at the top and their surroundings were living. The arrival of these friends will bring comfort to everyone."

Asi expressed that he does not fear the future but emphasized the need to prevent those who sow discord among the Syrian people, stating that discord is more dangerous than death. He assessed that the arrival of Syrian opposition to Damascus is a victory, stating that economic improvement and security will be ensured.

"I WAS AFRAID OF BEING SENT TO ASSAD'S TORTURE CENTERS"

An officer who wished to remain anonymous stated that he was responsible for financial matters in the regime army and that he faced severe pressure after two of his four brothers sided with the opposition. The soldier, who explained that he wanted to leave the army in the past, noted that his weapon had already been taken from him by the regime and that he feared for the safety of his last brother and his entire extended family being sent to Assad's torture centers if he left the army. A police officer also mentioned that they were very poor, and that their monthly salaries were seized by ranking officials under various pretexts to pocket the money themselves. The police officer stated that he faced discrimination at his workplace due to his sect, and that he was looked down upon in his neighborhood as a regime element, adding that he had to work at a street vendor stall in the evenings to support his family.
