Desert dust originating from North Africa has begun to show its effects across Turkey. Dust clouds being transported heavily in the atmosphere have turned the sky hazy in many cities, while parked vehicles have been covered in a mud-like color. Experts have drawn attention to the significant drop in air quality, calling for precautions especially for those with chronic illnesses, the elderly, and children. They also mentioned that the unconscious act of rubbing one's eyes could have serious consequences.
Desert dust transported from Libya has begun to show its effects across Turkey following warnings from the Meteorology Department. In the districts, dust particles in the air covered parked vehicles, turning them almost the color of mud.
Experts have started to issue warnings regarding this weather phenomenon. Prof. Dr. Aylin Kılıç stated that the eye-rubbing motion that most people unconsciously perform in dusty conditions can have serious consequences. Kılıç noted that microscopic sand and dust particles suspended in the air settle on the surface of the eye, emphasizing that rubbing the eyes during this period can have a sanding effect on the cornea.
ATTENTION CONTACT LENS WEARERS!
Kılıç expressed that corneal scratches not only lead to severe pain but also increase the risk of infection, potentially causing temporary or even permanent vision loss. She highlighted that those who wear contact lenses need to be especially careful. She pointed out that microorganisms on the hands increase the risk of infection when they come into contact with the eyes.
GENTLE WASHING SHOULD BE DONE
The expert mentioned that complaints such as burning, stinging, redness, and watering of the eyes can be frequently observed in dusty weather, recommending not to stay outside for long periods. Kılıç emphasized the importance of wearing protective eyewear for those who must go outside, stating that when a foreign body sensation occurs in the eye, gentle washing with sterile saline should be done instead of rubbing.
Kılıç indicated that in cases of sudden vision loss, light sensitivity, or persistent pain, one should consult an eye doctor without delay, warning that "a seemingly simple neglect can turn into permanent vision problems."
