WHO IS EDIP AKBAYRAM?

He was born on December 29, 1950, in Gaziantep. He contracted polio when he was just nine months old. Edip Akbayram's passion for music also began in his childhood years, during which he struggled with this disease. Akbayram stated, "I would go to the concerts of famous pop singers with the money I saved from my weekly allowance, and when I returned home, I would imitate them in front of the mirror." He formed an orchestra in his childhood and worked as an amateur in a wedding hall near his home.

In the orchestra they formed in high school, they played and sang compositions based on the poems of Pir Sultan and Karacaoğlan. He also made his first record, "Kendim Ettim Kendim Buldum," during his high school years. The name of the group that released his first record was Siyah Örümcekler. The record was released in two different editions under the titles "Siyah Örümcekler-Gaziantep Orchestra" and "Edip Akbayram and Siyah Örümcekler." After Gaziantep, Adana became his second address. Adana is the city where Akbayram first took the stage with the orchestra he formed. Later, he started working in a nightclub called "Beyaz Saray" here. In 1968, he graduated from high school and went to Istanbul. When he graduated from high school, he took university entrance exams to receive education in the profession he always wanted to learn, medicine, and he was accepted into dentistry. However, music prevailed, and he gave up this profession to devote himself to music.

HE PARTICIPATED IN THE GOLDEN MICROPHONE COMPETITION

After coming to Istanbul, he participated in the Golden Microphone Competition in 1971. He won first place with his first composition, "Kükredi Çimenler," inspired by a poem by Âşık Veysel. In 1974, he formed the Dostlar Orchestra and became one of the leading names in Anatolian pop music. Later, he received awards with 45s titled "Kara Kuzu," "Deniz Üstü Köpürür," and "Garip," and became an artist whose fame spread nationwide. The artist, who broke sales records with his songs "Aldırma Gönül" and "Eşkiya Dünyaya Hükümdar Olmaz," has received around 250 awards from various organizations.

HIS COMPOSITIONS WERE BANNED FROM BEING PLAYED

The 80s were difficult years for Edip Akbayram and similar musicians. Between 1981 and 1988, the broadcasting of his compositions on TRT was banned. However, starting from the mid-90s, especially with the album "Türküler Yanmaz," he made a new breakthrough and continued to walk without deviating from his line. Akbayram dedicated this album to those who lost their lives in the Sivas Massacre. This album included songs he composed from the works of Can Yücel, Oktay Rifat, Ahmed Arif, and Vedat Türkali.

"I TRIED TO AVOID SHARP AND CHEAP HEROISM"

From the beginning, Edip Akbayram explained what he wanted to do: "I wanted to create something lasting. I took Fikret Kızılok and Cem Karaca's interpretations of Anatolian melodies in the pop line as examples. I developed completely as an Edip Akbayram in terms of color and line. I wanted to make music that reflects the lives and problems of broad masses. However, I also tried to stay away from sharp, cheap heroism. Without compromising my beliefs, thoughts, and politics, I wanted to reach troubled, poor, broad masses using musical techniques and create something more contemporary." The artist, who married Ayten Hanım in 1979, has a daughter named Türkü and a son named Ozan from this marriage.
