A young man from an isolated indigenous tribe in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil, who had never been in contact with outsiders before, was seen on February 12 near the village of Bela Rosa, close to the Purus River.
FIRST HE WAVED A STICK, THEN LEARNED TO LIGHT A FIRE
A village resident reported that the boy was barefoot, wore a short dress resembling a wrap, and waved two wooden sticks when he saw the villagers. Footage shared on social media showed villagers trying to explain to the indigenous boy how to light a lighter. Those moments garnered significant attention on social media.
FUNAI CONFIRMED THE ISOLATED INDIGENOUS GROUP IN 2021
Employees of the National Indigenous Foundation (FUNAI), which works to protect indigenous peoples in Brazil, soon went to the village near the Amazon Rainforest and took the boy to the foundation's facility. FUNAI stated that efforts were being made to provide care for the boy and that a health team was expected. FUNAI had announced in 2021 that abandoned camps and some evidence were found near Bela Rosa, confirming the existence of an isolated indigenous group in the region. The area known as "Mamoria Grande" was declared a restricted zone for non-indigenous people in December 2024.
