In the Keratea region of Greece, a forest fire that started yesterday and has spread to different areas due to the wind has resulted in one death, and efforts to combat the flames are ongoing. The Deputy Mayor of Saronikos emphasized that the fire should not reach the Sunio National Park, located about 15 kilometers from Keratea, as it could lead to a major ecological disaster.
It was reported that new residential areas threatened by the forest fire that started yesterday afternoon in the Keratea region, located about 40 kilometers from Athens, have been evacuated, resulting in the loss of one life.
According to reports in the Greek press, officials stated that the flames, driven by the wind, have progressed towards Anavissos and surrounding settlements, which are approximately 10 kilometers away from Keratea, and citizens were urged via the 112 Emergency Alert System to move to safe areas from these regions.
EVACTION IN MANY AREAS
The report emphasized that the fire, which spread rapidly due to strong winds, could not be brought under control throughout the night, and with the first light of morning, aerial interventions resumed. Due to the ongoing fires in and around Keratea, it was reported that the regions of Drosia, Harvalo, Maliasteka, Agiasma, Dimolaki, Sinterina, Palea Fokea, Legrena, Harakas, Triantafillia, Thymari, Feriza, Olimpos, Mavro Lithari, and Agios Nikolaos have been evacuated so far.
"A GREAT ECOLOGICAL DISASTER MAY OCCUR"
Stavros Petropulos, Deputy Mayor of Saronikos, stated in an interview with Open TV that a gas cylinder was found in the fire area, which strengthens the possibility of arson. Petropulos noted that the winds would intensify during the day, emphasizing that the fire should not reach the Sunio National Park, located about 15 kilometers from Keratea, otherwise a great ecological disaster could occur.
According to the Fire Danger Map published by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection under the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection of Greece, "extremely high fire risk" is forecasted in 4 regions and "high fire risk" in 10 regions today.
