ARRESTED
Dutch police arrested Stam, 39, this week as part of an investigation into large-scale drug crimes. According to Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, Stam's parents and girlfriend were also arrested.
It is reported that this investigation was initiated after phone interceptions carried out by the police in 2021 and 2022. Stam's brother was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for cocaine trafficking and money laundering in March, but was released pending appeal.
Stam's parents were accused of money laundering and cannabis cultivation in 2016 after 40,000 Euros (33,800 pounds) hidden behind a washing machine in their home was found. However, the couple was acquitted, claiming that the money came from Stam's football earnings.
COULD FACE PRISON SENTENCE
After winning the Eredivisie championship with Twente under the management of Steve McClaren in 2010, Stam transferred to the Premier League. However, if found guilty now, he could face several years of imprisonment.
