Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has passed away

HE WAS THE LONGEST-LIVING U.S. PRESIDENT

Carter lived longer than other presidents in the U.S. He was placed under care in February 2023 due to advancing illnesses related to old age at his home in Plains, Georgia.

WHO IS JIMMY CARTER?

He is the 39th president of the United States. He served as president from 1977 to 1981. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work at the Carter Center. After the death of George H. W. Bush on November 30, 2018, he became the oldest living U.S. President.

HE WON THE PRESIDENCY AGAINST GERALD FORD

He was born on October 1, 1924. He is the child of a family engaged in peanut farming in the state of Georgia, USA. He was elected governor of Georgia in 1970. In 1976, he ran as a Democratic candidate against then-president Gerald Ford and won the election by a narrow margin to become president.

Carter dreamed of attending the U.S. Naval Academy in his childhood. In 1941, he began his undergraduate studies in engineering at Georgia Southwestern College near America. The following year, he transferred to the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and was accepted into the Naval Academy in 1943. He was a good student, but unlike the aggressive hazing culture of first-year students at the academy, he was seen as a quiet person who distanced himself from them. At the academy, Carter fell in love with Rosalynn Smith, a friend of his sister Ruth. The couple married shortly after their graduation in 1946.

HIS PRESIDENCY WAS FILLED WITH CRISES

During his presidency, there was an oil crisis. The inflation rate reached one of the highest levels in history. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. The regime of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in Iran was overthrown, leading to the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The U.S. embassy in Tehran was occupied by a group of students emboldened by the government, and embassy staff were held hostage for 444 days. This situation continued until the last days of his presidency, and his failure to secure the release of the hostages played a significant role in his loss to Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential election.

HE RECEIVED THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

In the period following his presidency, he took on the role of mediator in many global crises. For his contributions in this regard, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

In 1982, Carter established The Carter Center to promote and expand human rights. He traveled extensively to conduct peace negotiations, monitor elections, and advance the prevention and eradication of diseases in developing countries. Carter is regarded as a significant figure in the Habitat for Humanity charity. While actively commenting on ongoing American and global issues such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he has written over 30 books ranging from political memoirs to poetry. After the death of George H. W. Bush, the title of "oldest living U.S. President" passed to Jimmy Carter.

As he was preparing to turn 99, on February 18, 2023, the Carter Center announced that President Carter would receive palliative care at his home in Plains, Georgia, instead of undergoing further treatment, and would spend his remaining time at home with his family. On February 19, 2023, family and friends gathered at Carter's home of 62 years. Following the announcement, messages of support poured in from around the world. As of 2024, at the age of 100 and with 43 years of retirement, he is both the oldest living president and the longest-serving former U.S. president. He is also the third oldest living former world leader.
