Ahead of the 'Proposal for the Law on Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Cohesion' to be discussed today in the Turkish Grand National Assembly General Assembly, disagreements have deepened within the NEW Party group. While some deputies from the party have openly declared they will vote 'no,' party leader Özgür Özel has called an urgent meeting of the Central Executive Board at 12:00 noon at the Parliament.
The attitude that the NEW Party will adopt regarding the framework law proposal, which was accepted in the TBMM Justice Commission and brought to the General Assembly agenda, has become a matter of curiosity. For the proposal, which was supported with criticism during the commission stage, three deputies announced on their social media accounts that they would vote "no".
3 DEPUTIES OPENLY DECLARED THEY WOULD VOTE NO
Istanbul Deputy Cemal Enginyurt reacted to the proposal, arguing that operations against the opposition continue and that democracy is being damaged. Enginyurt stated that they support the end of terrorism, but claimed that the current practice is of a nature that "provides opportunities for terrorists".
Mugla Deputy Sureyya Ones Derici announced her decision by referring to the parliamentary oath she took at the TBMM podium. Ones Derici, recalling the promise of the existence of the state, the indivisible integrity of the country, and commitment to Ataturk's principles and revolutions, announced that she would say "no" in the vote.
Eskisehir Deputy Ibrahim Aslan, while supporting the goal of silencing the weapons, objected to the legal method being followed. Aslan emphasized that democracy cannot be divided and the law cannot be applied selectively, stating that social peace cannot be sacrificed to political engineering calculations.
SEZGIN TANRIKULU ANNOUNCED HE WOULD SAY "YES"
Diyarbakir Deputy Sezgin Tanrikulu, representing a different wing within the party, was the name who previously declared his vote as "yes". Tanrikulu admitted that he has serious criticisms regarding the preparation process of the law proposal, the broad powers granted to the judiciary, and the deficiencies in the text. However, he stated that he would vote "yes" in the General Assembly because he values any step that will end violence, conflict, and terrorist acts.
PARTY BACKROOMS ARE ACTIVE: OZGUR OZEL CALLED THE MYK TO THE PARLIAMENT
In the NEW Party backrooms, it is being discussed that the number of deputies inclined to vote "no" may not be limited to just three names. It is reported that deputies who think approving the proposal will be met with reaction among their own voter base have conveyed their concerns to the party administration.
Following this apparent difference of opinion, Chairman Ozgur Ozel took action. Ozel decided to convene the Central Executive Board (MYK) at the TBMM on August 10 at 12:00. It was reported that the main agenda item of the meeting would be the framework law and the common stance the party group will follow in the General Assembly vote.
