In Istanbul, as the heavy downpour that killed 2 people and turned roads into lakes weakened toward morning, a new danger emerged. Experts drew attention to the risk of landslides because the soil was saturated with water. A new rainy weather system is expected to reach Istanbul on Friday evening, but the intensity of the rainfall has not yet become clear. The meteorological service issued yellow and orange code warnings for 48 provinces, including Istanbul.
The heavy downpour that was effective in Istanbul on Wednesday, October 14, and paralyzed life across the city continued throughout the night, especially along the Bosphorus corridor and on the Anatolian Side.
Toward morning, the intensity of the rain decreased, but the traces of the flood remained in the city. Numerous avenues and streets were submerged, vehicles were swallowed by floodwaters, and transportation came to a standstill in some areas.
In Istanbul, where one of the highest rainfall values since 1985 was recorded, a 14-year-old child who was electrocuted in a puddle in Fatih and a 34-year-old person who fell while trying to cross floodwaters in Sarıyer lost their lives.
"THE SOIL IS SATURATED WITH WATER" WARNING
NTV Meteorology Editor Dilek Çalışkan drew attention to the new danger awaiting Istanbul after the rains eased.
Noting that the soil in the city has become saturated with water due to heavy rainfall, Çalışkan said that this situation could increase the risk of landslides.
Pointing out that the stream beds in Istanbul cannot continue their natural flow due to construction, Çalışkan used the following statements:
"Istanbul has 63 main streams. The water accumulated by heavy rainfall sought these streams in order to flow. But unfortunately, on all of these streams there were either shopping malls or buildings."
The expert stated that the end of the rains does not mean the danger has completely passed, emphasizing that particular caution is needed against the risk of landslides.
A NEW RAIN WAVE IS COMING ON FRIDAY EVENING
It was reported that the rainy weather system, which has weakened its effect in Istanbul, is moving toward Sakarya, Kocaeli, and the Western Black Sea.
It was stated that the amount of rainfall per square meter in these regions may exceed 50 to 80 kilograms.
Meanwhile, a new rainfall warning was issued for Istanbul. A new rainy weather system is expected to reach the city on Friday.
According to forecasts, the rains that will begin on Friday evening are expected to continue during the daytime hours on Saturday as well.
However, it is not yet clear how severe the new rain wave will be.

JUST AS THE FLOOD DANGER PASSED, THE RISK OF LANDSLIDES EMERGED
As the rains eased in Istanbul, attention turned to damage and evacuation efforts in areas affected by the flood.
However, it is stated that the danger may continue, especially on sloping terrain and in areas at risk of landslides, because the soil is saturated with water.
Due to the new rainy weather system expected on Friday evening, it is important for citizens to follow meteorological warnings and stay away from stream beds, underpasses where flooding has occurred, and areas at risk of landslides.
