On September 4th in Nepal, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, X, Reddit, and LinkedIn platforms were blocked due to the lack of applications for registration to the Nepal Ministry of Communication and Information Technology within the given time frame.

THEY MARCHED TO THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING

In response, protesters, mostly consisting of young people, marched towards the parliament building to protest not only the social media ban but also allegations of corruption. The British public broadcaster BBC and the Reuters news agency referred to these as 'Gen Z protests.' 'Gen-Z' writings were also seen on the walls of Kathmandu.

THEY SAID "WE WILL LIFT THE BAN" BUT...

In the escalating protests, the police used water cannons, tear gas, and ammunition against the protesters. 19 people died, and over 400 were injured. In response, the Nepalese government announced that the social media ban would be lifted. The Minister of Home Affairs, the Minister of Agriculture, and the Minister of Water Supply announced their resignations. Despite these statements, the protests did not subside. Attacks were carried out on the homes of political figures and ministers; the central office of the Nepal Congress Party, the federal parliament building, the Supreme Court building, and two residences of Nepal's Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli were set on fire.

The Nepal Prime Minister's Office announced that Prime Minister Oli had resigned following the violent protests and government backlash. In Lumbini province in the west of the country, about 1000 protesters set fire to some government vehicles at Gautam Buddha International Airport. In Madhesh province in the east, a curfew was declared for security reasons after 572 prisoners escaped from a prison.
