Workers laying a sewer pipe in Belgium found gold worth about 9 million euros in the basement wall of a building. Part of the fortune, which included more than 40 gold bars and 4,000 gold coins, is planned to be used to help those in need.
Construction workers working to lay a sewer pipe in Belgium encountered the surprise of their lives. Finding a hidden compartment in the basement wall of a building, the workers removed gold worth approximately 9 million euros (over 497 million lira) from inside it.
GOLD BARS CAME OUT OF THE WALL
According to the information provided, the incident occurred in a building that formerly belonged to a beer producer and is now used by a social assistance organization.
While laying the sewer pipe, the workers noticed a small piece of gold inside the wall. Upon further examination, a hidden compartment and a chest placed inside it were found.
MORE THAN 40 BARS, 4,000 GOLD COINS
When the chest was opened, more than 40 gold bars and about 4,000 gold coins were revealed. The market value of the treasure found is estimated to be around 9 million euros. Following a tip-off, police teams arriving at the scene registered the gold and transferred it to a high-security warehouse. The construction site was cordoned off.
PART OF THE WEALTH MAY GO TO THOSE IN NEED
The prosecutor's office launched an investigation to determine who the gold belonged to. In particular, the mint marks on the coins and historical details are being examined.
According to the information provided, in Belgium, rightful owners are given a 5-year application period for such finds. If the legal owner does not emerge within this period, the wealth is expected to be divided between the social assistance organization named CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, which owns the building, and the workers who found the gold.
The organization, which provides support to approximately 45,000 people each year, plans to use the share that may fall to it for its social assistance activities.
