In the corruption investigation at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the title of Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested, was removed by Google yesterday and became the center of reactions. Following this move, which was made without a definitive court decision, Google took a step back and İmamoğlu's title was restored.
The Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was arrested by the duty magistrate as part of a 'corruption' investigation. After the procedures, İmamoğlu was sent to Silivri Prison.
MINISTRY OF INTERIOR REMOVED FROM OFFICE
The Ministry of Interior announced that İBB President Ekrem İmamoğlu has been temporarily removed from office.
In a statement from the ministry, it was said, "Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has been arrested based on the decision dated 23.03.2025 and numbered 2025/347 of the Istanbul 10th Criminal Court of Peace for unlawfully recording personal data, receiving bribes, interfering in the tenders of public institutions or organizations, and establishing an organization for the purpose of committing crimes; he has been temporarily removed from office by the Ministry of Interior in accordance with Article 127 of the Constitution and Article 47 of the Municipal Law No. 5393."
GOOGLE IMMEDIATELY REMOVED IT
Following the developments, a notable move came from Google. Google removed the term "İBB President" used for Ekrem İmamoğlu. When İmamoğlu's name was searched on Google, only the phrase "Businessman and former Beylikdüzü Mayor" appeared.
TITLE RETURNED
After this move, which drew reactions from Google in a short time, a step back was taken. Google restored İmamoğlu's title of "İBB President." When Ekrem İmamoğlu's name was searched on Google, the phrase "Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality" appeared again.
