PERMISSION NOT GRANTED FOR CHP'S "PALESTINE" ACTION IN TAKSIM
The police teams stated that holding a demonstration in Taksim is prohibited and made warnings to end the unlawful action. A scuffle broke out between the police and the demonstrators who did not heed the warnings.
STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR DAVUT GÜL
Following the events, a statement came from Istanbul Governor Davut Gül. In a statement he made on his Twitter account, he emphasized that the ban on demonstrations in Taksim has been in place for years, and insisting on it is a provocation.
"PROVOCATION IN THE MILDEST TERMS"
In his statement, Governor Gül said: "For security reasons, no demonstrations have been allowed in Taksim Square and Istiklal Street for many years. This situation has been clearly communicated to the relevant individuals and groups multiple times. While the right to demonstrate and gather is free in many different parts of Istanbul, insisting on gathering in this area, which is limited for security reasons, is, in the mildest terms, provocation."
"ATTEMPTS TO DISTURB PUBLIC ORDER WILL NEVER BE TOLERATED"
We condemn those who exploit the sacred cause of our Palestinian brothers for their own political calculations. Attempts to disturb public order by exploiting social sensitivities will never be tolerated. Our security forces, who maintained their composure throughout this process, have fulfilled their duties within the framework of the law and have shown a determined stance against attempts targeting the peace of our nation.
Criminal complaints will be filed against those who made and organized these illegal calls, which led to the injury of our police officers and the prosecution of some of our citizens; the judicial process will be meticulously followed."
SOME METRO STATIONS CLOSED
Meanwhile, the Istanbul Governorship had decided to close some stations of the metro line after 3:00 PM. The following statement was made: "As of 3:00 PM today, until further notice; our M2 Yenikapı-Hacıosman Metro Line will be closed for operation at Taksim and Şişhane stations, as well as our F1 Taksim-Kabataş Funicular Line."
