Greece and Israel conducted a joint naval exercise off the northern coast of Crete. During the exercise, in which SPIKE NLOS guided missiles purchased by Greece from Israel were also used, a decommissioned Greek frigate was targeted. Following the live-ammunition firings, the warship was sunk.
MISSILES FIRED OFF CRETE
According to a statement from the Greek General Staff, the exercise, held in the middle of the week, was attended by Chief of the Greek General Staff Dimitrios Houpis and Commander of the Israeli Navy Eyal Harel.
In the firings with SPIKE NLOS and ER guided missiles, Greek frigates, submarines, fast attack craft, helicopters, and air force elements took part. Israel participated in the exercise with two missile-carrying ships.
THEY SANK THE TARGET FRIGATE
In the most striking part of the exercise, a frigate previously decommissioned by the Greek Navy was used as a target. After the missile firings were completed, the ship sank into the waters.
THEY DISCUSSED THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN
Within the scope of the exercise, Houpis and Harel held a bilateral meeting. During the meeting, military relations between the two countries, as well as freedom of navigation at sea and developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, were discussed.
The parties agreed to increase cooperation in the areas of naval operations, new technologies, and innovation.
