Harsh reaction from Hüseyin Yayman to the Famagusta series on Netflix! Talks with representatives have begun.

04.09.2024 17:00

Hüseyin Yayman, Chairman of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey's Digital Media Commission and AK Party Member of Parliament for Hatay, stated that they have met with Netflix's representative in Turkey regarding the Famagusta series, which is expected to be released on Netflix on September 20th and portrays Turkish soldiers as invaders in the Greek Cypriot-controlled area of Cyprus. Yayman used the phrase "We will never lose the success we have achieved on the field at the negotiation table. Cyprus is Turkish and will remain Turkish."

TBMM Digital Media Commission Chairman Hüseyin Yayman, a member of the ruling AKP party, expressed his reaction to the series called Famagusta, which is expected to be released on Netflix on September 20th and portrays Turkish soldiers as invaders in the Greek Cypriot production. Yayman stated that he will meet with Netflix Turkey representatives regarding the series.

"WE WILL NOT LOSE WHAT WE HAVE WON IN THE FIELD AT THE TABLE"

Yayman stated that he had a meeting with Pelin Mavili, the Director of Public Relations for Netflix Turkey, Middle East, and North Africa, and said that he will invite her to the commission when the parliament opens and they will discuss how to proceed. Yayman pointed out that the opinion of the Turkish nation regarding the series is clear and stated, "We will never lose the success we have achieved in the field at the table. We do not approve or support the Greek Cypriot side diverting the Cyprus issue in a different direction through a surrealistic series that is disconnected from reality and using propaganda and perception operations. Cyprus is Turkish and will remain Turkish."

"WE DO NOT APPROVE THE GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE'S DISREGARD FOR THE TURKISH REPUBLIC OF NORTHERN CYPRUS"

Yayman stated that it is significant that this series is filmed in Maraş (Varosha) after the opening of the region, which is owned by the Evkaf Foundation. Yayman stated that they do not approve of the understanding that wants to turn their achievements in Maraş into a series or film and said, "We believe in the brotherhood of nations. We believe that the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean should be a sea of peace and brotherhood. We do not approve of the Greek Cypriot side disregarding the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus."

APPEAL TO THE FILM INDUSTRY: OUR SUPPORT IS ALWAYS WITH YOU

Addressing the film industry, Yayman continued his speech as follows: "Just as they make series and films in their unjust cases and use them for propaganda, we do not need to make propaganda. We need to tell the truth and talk about the glorious resistance in Erenköy, the bloody Christmas, and the Muratağa and Sandallar massacres. For this reason, I want to make a call to the Turkish film industry; the Republic of Turkey and our commission are with you. Our support is always with you to explain the Cyprus issue to the whole world, Europe, and the Greek Cypriot side. "

"WE DO NOT APPROVE THE BROADCAST OF THE SERIES ON NETFLIX"

We do not approve or support the broadcast of this series on Netflix. Netflix is one of the platforms with the highest number of subscribers in Turkey. It is also in the top 10 worldwide. We continue to have hope that the sensitivities of Turkey, which is considered such a large market, will be taken into account and a solution will be found. Our stance is clear regarding the negotiation of issues. We will not lose what we have achieved in the field at the table. We will never allow the Greek Cypriot side's perception operations and black propaganda. We will continue to defend the rights of the Turkish nation and the Turkish Cypriots in international platforms, just as we did yesterday. Because the Cyprus issue is the issue of the Turkish nation, and the whole of Turkey knows that the Greek Cypriot side has macro demands that go beyond its purpose in Cyprus. "

"AK PARTY IS A PARTY AGAINST BANS AND CENSORSHIP"

Yayman stated that we are experiencing a digital age and as a result, we are facing a trolling approach from everyday life to politics, which is disconnected from reality and does not know what it is talking about or where its words will lead. Yayman emphasized that they never embraced this trolling politics and said that politicians should act responsibly. Yayman stated the following: "The AK Party has established the infrastructure of digital platforms in Turkey, provided the legal and administrative framework, prepared the technological infrastructure, opened representations, developed a relationship of dialogue, and determined the working methods of transnational digital companies in Turkey. The AK Party is a party against bans and censorship. Therefore, we do not think that bans, censorship, and restrictions are a solution. However, we believe that it is very important to maintain the balance between freedom and security. Like all over the world, this issue is considered as a non-partisan issue in Turkey as well. Unfortunately, the destructive effect of digital networks and social media is greater than their constructive effect. We have experienced and continue to experience this especially during the Arab Spring process. "

"WE DO NOT ACCEPT RACISM, RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE, AND PEDOPHILIA"

Referring to some street interviews, Yayman stated that what is a crime in real life is also a crime in the digital world, and therefore, Turkish criminal laws must be followed. Yayman emphasized that they do not accept transnational digital companies seeing themselves above the nation-state and continued as follows: "We do not approve of transnational digital networks seeing themselves above legislation, executive, judiciary, and societies and building a new digital citizenship. Therefore, we have a principle decision that these platforms should be freedom platforms and new agoras and freedom squares for cities. Turkey is a country that has always been in the top ten in terms of digitalization in the world. We also see how important of a digital network user Turkey is, or in other words, how big of a market it is. While digital networks present themselves as freedom platforms, they do not even comply with community rules, let alone national and universal norms, by neglecting issues such as violence against women, marginalization, racism, hate crimes, addiction, promotion of drug use, religious intolerance, Islamophobia, digital bullying, pedophilia, and gender neutralization. "

WARNING ABOUT GAMES

Yayman also pointed out the games on digital platforms and said, "We all know that uncontrolled relationships and communication are established in the chat rooms of these games.

This issue is not only a matter for governments, states, and public officials, but it is a matter for all of us as a whole. We all, especially families, parents, and teachers, need to act more consciously on this matter. " said.
