Geographically indicated white dry beans, planted in May in the Tufanbeyli district of Adana, have begun to mature and be harvested after months of care and irrigation. The beans are finding buyers at prices between 100 and 125 TL per kilogram in the field.
COLLECTED BY UPROOTING
Tufanbeyli's thin-skinned white beans were registered with a geographical indication by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in 2023. The dry bean cultivation, which has been ongoing in Tufanbeyli for years, continued this year as well. Producers and agricultural workers arriving at the fields in the early morning hours began collecting the mature beans by uprooting them along with their roots. The harvest work in the vast agricultural lands was also captured from the air.
In Pınarlar District, one of Tufanbeyli's important agricultural regions, bean production constitutes a significant source of livelihood for local farmers. The products planted in May reach harvest after maintenance and irrigation throughout the season.
DRIED AND THRESHED
The harvested beans are dried and then passed through a thresher to separate them from their grains. Afterwards, the sorted beans are made ready for sale.
Bean producer Mehmet Tokdemir stated that weather conditions and agricultural maintenance are important throughout the season, adding that they are happy to have reached the harvest period.
Tokdemir noted that they produce beans and chickpeas and stated that they also use the internet and social media channels to deliver their products to consumers in different provinces.
Producer Tokdemir, stating that the products are dried, passed through a thresher, and individually sorted for sale, said, "After threshing, we go through them again by hand. We select them one by one and deliver them to our customers."
"COOL WEATHER IS IMPORTANT FOR FLAVOR"
Producer Dudu Tokdemir stated that Tufanbeyli's climatic conditions are advantageous for bean production.
Tokdemir, noting that beans love cool and windy weather, expressed satisfaction with the development of the products this season. Stating that they do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides in their own production, Tokdemir noted that they grow the products using natural production methods.
WOMEN ALSO PARTICIPATE IN THE HARVEST
The participation of women in the harvest in Pınarlar District drew attention. Women working in the field take part in the work of uprooting and collecting the mature beans.
After the harvested products go through the drying, threshing, and sorting stages, they are delivered to consumers. Producers aim to reach wider audiences with the white dry beans grown in Pınarlar and to bring them directly to consumers.
On the other hand, Serna Göle, who came to Pınarlar District after seeing the bean field on the internet, also examined the production area on-site and witnessed the harvest work. Göle stated that she was pleased to see the production process in the field up close.
